Milind Deora takes additional charge as Minister of State for Shipping

From October 31, 2012, Mr. Milind Deora, Honourable Minister of State for Communication and IT has been given the additional charge of Minister of State for Shipping. After assuming the charge, Mr. Deora paid a visit to Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) Office on November 1. The Minister had a meeting with Mr. Rajeev Gupta, Chairman, MbPT along with the other senior officials of MbPT. Mr. S.Hajara, SCI Chairman presented a bouquet to the Minister; Mr. N.N.Kumar, Deputy Chairman, JNPT was also present when the Minister was given a warm welcome. The Minister spoke on the future of the ports and he said that his top priority would be developing the coastline “in a way that allows economic opportunities”. He also referred to the safety of the sailors. He added: “Other issues of concern are protection of seafarers, how do we protect them and also people who have invested in the shipping sector”. He also spoke on the target of awarding 42 projects during the current financial year, 2012-13. The two new major ports are included in those 42 projects which cost a total investment of INR 14,000 crore. Once the project completed, the total capacity addition would be 245 million tonnes. He said: “We have received in-principle approval for two new major ports, we have already floated a new note, we hope by November we should be able to get Cabinet approval”.
