Coast Guard rescues stranded crew of Pratibha

When the Mumbai-based MT Pratibha Cauvery ran aground because of raging storms and the sea, the Coast Guard advised the crew onboard the ship to remain on the board; but, the advice was ignored and 22 crew members jumped into the lifeboats abandoning the oil tanker; the Captain was also among them. With five members still reported missing, the search is on. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard airlifted the 15 crew members who remained on board the ship following the advice of the Coast Guard; they rescued them, one by one, and brought them to the shore. The search operations actually were carried out about 20 nautical miles in all directions. Of course, the defence and the port authorities were aware of the distress in which the ship found itself; however, rescue could not be rushed to it on account of the inclement weather. Now, the question that puzzles all is the wisdom behind the ship master’s decision to abandon the vessel under stress since the apprehension of the ship sinking was baseless as the ship ran aground in a place where there was no possibility of the ship sinking. In fact, a preliminary inquiry is to be conducted by the Director General Shipping about this disaster and a report has to be submitted within a month. Until then, the ship would be docked at Chennai Port, as Shipping Minister had said.
