The Haldia Bulk Terminals, a joint venture of ABG of India and LDA of France, having decided to terminate its contract with the Kolkata Port Trust, retrenched all of its 348 employees on 3rd November, 2012. Mr. Gurpreet Malhi, CEO of HBT said in a statement that HBT was constrained to take this decision because of “repeated breaches of contract and its failure to ensure a safe and a conducive work environment”. It informed the “Kolkata Port on October 31 of its decision to immediately terminate its contract for operation in Haldia Dock Complex.” The statement added: “HBT is left with no option but to retrench its 348 employees w.e.f. November 3, 2012”. Of course, the employees have been informed officially and they have been given compensation “they are entitled to under the provision of the relevant laws”. Kolkata Port, on its turn, lays all the blame at the door of HBT. Mr. Manish Jain, Kolkata Port Trust Chairman said: “They want to run away by creating a hype so that they can escape paying penalties”. Mr. Jain accuses HBT of breach of contract: “HBT committed breach of contract on more than one occasion and we overlooked them. It refused on-loading of cargo. The company also changed its shareholding pattern between tendering process (2008) and award of contract (2010)”.
