Kathryn took stock of the initiatives undertaken by DP World in Vallarpadam that include organizing and supporting a medical health camp, equipping the St. Mary’s School with environment-friendly kitchen appliances, supplying and planting tree saplings and contributing new fans and chairs to the Ochanturth orphanage.
DP World was one of the first large international firms to establish a facility in Kerala, providing employment to many and changing the face of the shipping industry, trade and commerce in the State. Over the years, DP World has been involved in many community activities in Kerala – supported open heart surgery procedures of 21 children; constructed eco-friendly toilet facilities for truck cleaners at the terminal; conducted an awareness programme on waste management; organized a beach clean-up drive and developed its association with the Ochanturth orphanage since the ICTT became operational in February 2011.
The orphanage houses around 25 girls between the ages of 3-15. DP World has been providing the inmates with books, clothes and bed sheets for the past two years. DP World employees also spend time and share a meal with the children on festive occasions like Onam. Speaking at the orphanage Kathryn stated: “The approach at DP World is focused on the four quadrant model of community, people, environment and market place. This instills in the minds that responsibility is woven into the fabric of our company and its values. DP World firmly supports the integration of responsible business practices into our operations and changing the lives of people who live in the communities around our ports.”
The company also believes strongly in developing the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs and to accomplish this, it is constantly recognizing the talent of children, felicitating them with awards and encouraging them in education.
Mr. K.K. Krishnadas, CEO, DP World Cochin, said: “We inaugurated ICTT in February 2011, and over the past one year or so we have been making considerable efforts to work with the community living in Vallarpadam, our new home. Improving the standard of living and creating a clean safe environment in Vallarpadam is as much our responsibility as is of the Government of Kerala”
Mr. Anil Singh, Senior Vic-President and Managing Director of DP World Subcontinent region, pointed out: “We are glad that Kathryn Wightman-Beaven is here to share her extensive knowledge and we look to incorporate her insights into our programmes in the near future.
