
Several individuals and firms have come under keen study with regard to the illegal transportation of iron ore about 50.79 lakh tonnes to Belekeri port, located some 26 kilometers south of Karwar on the bank of Hattikeri river. Under direction from the Supreme Court to complete the investigation within a stipulate time, the Criminal Bureau of Investigation had asked the transporters and the traders to submit all the relevant records such as the permits from the Departments of Mines and Geology, counterfoils of the forest permits and also the details of names and the addresses of the companies or firms from where the iron ore was purchased. Those who had been served the notice were asked, last month, to appear before it in its Bangalore office. Many supporters of the BSR Congress were said to be in the list of those who were served the notice; in addition, the Bureau has asked for the details of the ore supplied to he CBI, it is said, served notices in person as well through speedpost.
