UK expert to improve draught in the channel to Haldia Dock Complex

HR Wallingford is an UK based organization with a proven expertise in river training and river modeling and it has been now engaged to study and recommend measures to improve the draught in the navigation channel that leads to the Haldia port. The team, consisting of eight experts from different fields of operations, is expected to submit its report at the beginning of 2013 at the latest. The decision of the Centre to release about INR 1,000 towards the long-pending River Regulatory Measures (RRM) depends on this report. The expert team has already started its work. Mr. Richard Nicholas Bray, an expert in maintenance dredging and Mr. Tim Chesher of Wallingford paid a visit to Haldia and carried out inspection. It is said that there will be a very crucial meeting between the two experts and the advisor from the Planning Commission and consent from the Planning Commission is a must for the dredging work in the Hoogly to begin. The experts from Wallingford have asked for records from the port officials regarding their study about the river for about 30- 40 years. According to an official, the experts, after studying the records seemed to conclude that “the key to tackling the crisis is to maintain alignment with nature. This is where the data will come handy. It will tell the experts how we have tinkered with the river system over the years and the response we got. The report will be based on our proposed projects at Sagar and Shalukkhali. Once the report is ready, we will propose short-term and long –term measures to the Centre”.
