Somali pirates free a cargo ship nearly after two years

MV Orna, owned by the United Arab Emirates based Sirago Ship Management, was hijacked 400 nautical miles north east of the Seychelles in December 2010. A pirate commander in Somalia, Hassan Abdi said on Saturday that the ship had been freed after two years of capture since a ransom of $600,000 had been paid on Friday. He said that six hostages were still being held hostages on land and, in fact, the pirates had killed one of the crew earlier in August because of delay in payment of the ransom money. Orna’s crew was 25 and out of them, 18 were Syrians and one was Sri Lankan when captured and it was loaded with 26,500 tonnes of coal; it is a bulk cargo vessel with deadweight of 27,915 tonnes. Abdi said that the other ships towed away the vessel since it had run out of fuel.
