In a function, Mr.G.K.Vasan, Minister for Shipping, came out with a view that the ministry would like to consider the suggestion of building barge terminals to improve the efficiency in the movement of the cargo and to reduce the traffic congestion in the city. The barge terminals would help to increase the cargo transportation between Chennai Port Trust and Ennore Port. They would be constructed at the cost of INR 119 crore. Because of the ban on the handling of coal and iron ore by Madras High Court early this year, the Chennai Port has experienced a sharp decline in the net profit for the year 2011-12. Of course, the issue of the ban must be addressed to. The Minister said: “According to the Ministry, without affecting the employment of the workers and interests of the people, an amicable solution that can be accepted by all, will be taken soon”. He also distributed financial assistance to the tune of 26 crore to the relatives of the deceased employees of the Chennai Port Trust.
