BJP, MNS, villagers—all oppose the proposed port near the village Nandgoan

Last December, 2011, the Maharashtra Government entered into an agreement with M\S JSW Infrastructure Limited to build an all-weather multi-cargo port in a Greenfield site near a village Nandgaon in Phalgar Taluka. The project cost is INR 1,175 crore. From the political parties to the local fishermen, all opposed the project. Mr.Vinod Tawde , the Leader of the Opposition in  Maharashtra Legislative Council, did not mince words when he said : “ The government should first clear all the doubts in the minds of the local people and go ahead with the project only after meeting their demands”. Maharashtra Navniraman Sena (MNS) and the Bharatiya Janatha Party (BJP) too opposed the plan of the port. Mr. Kundan Sankhe, MNS district rural chief, had said in a statement that a public meet would be organized on Sunday to discuss the problem in detail. The President of Maharashtra Machhimar Kruti Samiti Mr.Rambhau Patil said that fishermen all over the state would not allow the construction of the port. The planned port is expected to handle about 8.4 million tonnes of cargo in the first year and it will go up to 16.7 million tonnes in the tenth year and finally, it will reach 75 million tonnes at the end of thirty years.
