Two more ports to begin container operations

The export-import trade must welcome the news that soon two more ports, Krishnapatnam Port Container Terminal (KPCT) and L &T Kattupalli Port are likely to commence container services soon. Known as an all-weather port, KPCT is situated about 190 kilometer of Chennai while Kattupalli is just 30 kilometers from Chennai Port. Bengal Tiger Line is starting its Asia feeder service from KPCT from Septermber 27. Though L&T Kattupalli Port has received notification from the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) enabling it to unload the imported goods and load export goods, it is waiting for a positive nod from the State Government. According to some official source, the Commissionerate of Chennai Customs had given their consent after an inspection of the Container Freight Station (CFS) inside Kattupalli port. The container services to Malaysia and Singapore are to commence soon. A port user observed that though they were happy to have two more ports, “it is important to widen the two lane North Chennai Thermal Power Station road as it serves as a crucial link to Ennore and Kattupalli. The failure to do so would result in traffic congestion and might not give any relief”. It appears to be a valid point for attention.
