Environment Ministry sends a panel to inspect Adani port at Mundra

Based on the complaints received by the ministry regarding  violations of the conditions laid by the government in the construction of the port, the Environment Ministry appointed a committee of experts under Mrs. Sunita Narain, the Director General of Centre for Science and Environment to visit Adani port to study the alleged violations by the port. The internal note from the Ministry sent on September 14 said that the committee would examine “whether construction of Mundra port, roads, railways was taken up prior to the grant of forest environment clearance”. Two groups, one of fishermen and the other of farmers, laid serious charges against the port. The general secretary of Machimar Adhikar Sangharsh Sangathan of fishermen, Mr.Bharat Patel claimed that the development of the port and special economic zone (SEZ) was started even before the environment ministry gave the clearance to the group. The president of Kheti Vikas Seva Trust of farmers, Mr.Naran Gadhavi accused Adani of violating the conditions laid by the ministry by disturbing the creek, sand dunes and the mangroves, thus damaging the area ecologically. Mr. Bharat Patel also referred to the earlier committee set up by the then Environment Minister, Mr. Jairam Ramesh to study the violations related to the construction of airport, township and hospital prior to obtaining the environmental clearance. According to the September 14 note, the committee was formed since “complaints have been received regarding severe impact upon environment safety and integrity by Adani Port and SEZ Limited”. The other members of the committee are Mr. A.Mehrotra and Mr.Lalit Kapur of the environment ministry, Mr.R.Ramesh, member of the National Coastal Zone Management Authority (NCZMA) and Mr.Anthony Gnanamuthu.
