Essar Shipping tug workers observed hunger strike

The delay in fulfilling the long-pending demands of the contractual workers of Essar Shipping drove the workers, beginning from the captain to the deck crew, to go on a hunger strike at Hazira on Saturday. They sat at the company’s jetty. The company has given the contract of operating the tugs to a firm, SVS. The workers operating ten tugs as of now at Hazira went on strike. Mr.Ajay Mewala, a member of Forward Seamen Union of India (FUSI) observed: “Workers have long-pending demands, which include depositing Provident Fund (PF) and Public Provident Fund (PPF) amount in a government body rather than depositing it in a private trust. Payment of gratuity to workers is pending and they are also harassed when they sign in and out”. In fact, a meeting held two days back in Mumbai could not solve the issues.  A tug crew member on strike said: “No company official has made any attempt to start dialogue”. But the company’s stand is that the issue must be solved by the SVS officials.
