Traffic congestion on road affects steel trade at Chennai Port

The decision of the Chennai Port Trust not to allow the container trucks inside the port for parking, the steel traders claim, has affected their business. Mr. S.A.Azeez, honorary secretary for The South India Iron and Hardware Merchant Association said that their trucks have to stay on the roads leading to Chennai Port Trust for two days just to cover 15km due to heavy traffic congestion on the road. He said: “On an average, 5,000 tonnes of steel and iron used to be transported from our godowns to various client sites. Now, it has come down by half”. The inordinate delay causes another problem to the traders: “Our drivers and other workmen take two days off as they spend two days in the truck”. The traders not only lose money but, it seems, they also lose their men for two days. Shifting the godowns was one solution some steel traders resorted to.  Mr.J.Raja, Joint Secretary of Chennai Steel Yard Trailer Owner Association said that the steel traders would be forced to move out of North Chennai if their trucks could not have a free movement. He added: “Steel traders operate around 500 trucks per day”. The associations of the steel traders have appealed to the State Government and the Chennai Port Trust to take steps to ease the traffic congestion which affects not only their trade but even the normal traffic also.
