Balmer Lawrie shelves a logistics hub project near Kolkata

A logistics hub project of INR 150 crore in Dankuni on the outskirts had to be given up by Balmer Lawrie & Company since the clearances were not given to the company to buy land. Sources say that the Dankuni multi-modal project, if materialized, would have been the first of its kind in Bengal. Balmer Lawrie& Company, which offers, as the company claims, “seamless logistics solutions to its clients through a country-wide network of offices including all Major Airports and Ports in India”, had approached the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) for three approvals: “We sought exemption under the West Bengal Land Reforms Act and under Urban Land Ceiling Act. We also sought approval for converting 45 acres of agriculture land to industrial land. But we were told later by a state government department that these permissions cannot be given. We had no option but to shelve our plans”. For a similar logistics project in Visakhapatnam, the company has already signed an agreement with the port. The project is to come up on a 50-acres of land with an investment of INR about 180 crore. According to a source, “The technical and financial feasibility study is over for the Vizag project. We are now working out the finer details”.
