The Bengal Tiger Line feeder service will serve the port on a fortnightly basis and will rotate through Singapore, Port Klang, Chennai, Krishnapatnam and back to Singapore.
Strategically located in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, Krishnapatnam Port expects to handle 35,000 containers per month in the first few months. The container terminal has an annual handling capacity of 1.2 million TEU (twenty equivalent units) extendable up to 6 million TEUs on completion of the second phase by investing $2 billion in the next six years.
So far, the port has invested $1 billion in the first phase of the project. However, Mr. Yendluri declined to comment on the fund raising and the means of financing to fund the project.
The port with berth at the container terminal is promoted by Hyderabad-based CVR Group having interests in engineering. The company plans to add seven more berths in the second phase and increase the draft to 17.5 metres from 13.5 metres now.
The port has outstanding road and rail connectivity. A dedicated 4-lane road connects the port with National Highway-5. A two-lane rail head provides rail connectivity from the port to Chennai – Kolkata National Rail network.
