Visakhapatnam Port takes steps to reduce pollutio

A commercial unit, big or small, must realize and respond to the calls of social responsibility; such units will receive a ready social support and appreciation. The residents of the Visakhapatnam Port have been subject to the adverse consequences of open handling of coal in the port. Nearby buildings stand testimony to the spread of coal pollution with layers of thin coast dust not only on the walls but also on the utensils inside. Parents of school-going children have seen the clothes of the children getting a dirty tinge that refuses to wash even with the best detergents. Now, it is a great relief to note that the Visakhapatnam Port has plans to modernize it in such a way that not only its capacity to handle coal and ore will increase manifold but also is the threat and hazard of coal pollution is minimized to a very large extent.  The Visakhapatnam Port Trust, with a goal of attaining a capacity to handle 85 million tonnes by 2015, has carefully crafted plans of modernization. Apart from deepening channels and berths, it will construct new berths; install highly sophisticated equipments for handling cargo and other logistics.  To impress upon the people around the area that the port is aware of and attending to the health hazard to the residents near, the port has already revamped two berths; three massive wharf cranes have been brought in. Such steps will go a very long way in its efforts to make the port pollution free.
