In response to July 30 petition from India’s Toxics Watch Alliance, the Supreme Court ruled that any ship with hazardous materials reaching Indian waters for recycling must follow the United Nations Basel Convention treaty on hazardous waste management. The ruling has the following implications: India can no longer accept vessels from the US and Europe; the vessels coming to India must notify to India regarding the hazardous materials it has on board; it must approve ship importation from all sources for scrapping before the vessel arrives. According to Jim Puckett, Basel Action Network Director, India has been violating the international law in ship scrapping. He added: “It will no longer be able to do so”. He also pointed out that the implementation of UN Basel Convention treaty will bring relief to hundreds of poor and desperate laborers from unsafe ship breaking practices.
