A good road connectivity is a must for any port to develop and sustain its business. But, NMPT appears to suffer from poor road connectivity. In an Exporters’ meet jointly organized by Karnataka Bank Limited and the Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO), participating exporters expressed their concern about the absence of a good road link to NMPT. Mr. Walter D’Souza, Chairman of FIEO, Southern Region, observed that nearly 40% of its export goes to the ports in the neighboring states because of the poor connectivity. In fact, the issue has been brought to the attention of the Government but in vain; no progress has been made so far. Some of the participants attributed this failure to the political uncertainty in the state. Mr.Nowneeth Kumar, Deputy Traffic Manager,NMPT, said that the port has performed well in some of the commodities like coffee cargo. As against 10,000 coffee cargo exports in the past for six years, it is doing 1.45 lakh tonnes now; moreover, through its dynamic marketing measures, the Port has a Bellary-based company agreeing to divert three of its coal cargo ships through NMPT. Regarding the downward trend in traffic in all the ports for last 60 days, he said: “It is a trend. We have to cope with it”. Mr.D’Souza informed the participants in the meet that NMPT is organizing a meeting of its users in September to discuss their issues. Mr.M.R.Vasudeva, Airport Director, Mangalore Airport, spoke about the progress made in establishing air cargo complex at Mangalore airport.
