Land acquisition generally proves to be a great hurdle whenever the authorities of a port attempt to establish a rail link to the port. As for the Vizhinjam container transshipment terminal is concerned, the Government is driven to look for a new alignment for the rail link because of hurdles in the land acquisition for this multi-crore project. Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited, a Government company, appointed a consultant called The Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) to go into the issue and find solution for the project. After a survey, RVNL submitted a report with a new link and this report has been forwarded to the Railways. Mr. A.S.Suresh Babu, Chief Executive Officer, said: “The earlier alignment was Vizhinjam port to Neyyatinkara via Balaramapuram. But there are some issues including two or three temples, of which is one is said to be centuries old. We are comfortable with the new alignment”. The new alignment will cut short the length of the connectivity by 2 kms from the first one of 15 kms.
