Mr. Anil Wadhwa, Indian Ambassador to Bangkok, said that India has granted a loan of USD 500 million to Myanmar. This loan will also be used to construct a 3,200 kilometre highway that connects India with Myanmar and Thailand. India is one of the six countries that constitute Asean, the other countries being China, Japan, Korean, Australia and New Zealand. It is an Association of South East Asian Nations, aiming to accelerate, among other things, economic growth and social progress in the member countries and its membership keeps enlarging . The Ambassador also pointed out that India would host an Asean summit in December, when India’s connectivity with the other Asean countries through roads and rails would occupy a place of priority. He also added: “The trilateral highway project will allow freight and container trucks to move across the borders from India to Myanmar and Thailand via Chiang Rai and border towns. It will play a crucial role in boosting trade and investment flows in the three countries, creating jobs and other benefits.” The construction work has already started and it is said that the project should be completed by 2016.
