Chennai Port plans to reach regional pre-eminence

On the eve of a trade facilitation meet organized in association with the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) on Friday in Coimbatore, Mr. Atulya Misra, Chairman of Chennai Port Trust, spoke to newspersons regarding the plans that would transform the Chennai Port, in about three years, into a mega terminal.  When the goal is achieved, it will maintain its top position in the container traffic. Then, it will handle 4 million tonnes of cargo. To achieve this goal, the project needs an investment of about INR 4,000 crore. The project involves, first, developing north of existing Bharathi dock with two new breakwaters with a total length of 4.5 km and a continuous quay length of 2 km with 22 metre. Once it is completed, it gains the capacity to handle ultra large container ships of capacity 15,000 TEU and a length of 400 metre. This ambitious project would be on BOT basis. Excepting the total cost of dredging, floating crafts and the navigational aids which would be about INR 561 crore, the other expenses would be borne by the BOT operator. It is said that it will be three years before the first ship is anchored in the new mega terminal. The other authorities who were present and interacted with the presspersons were Mr. R. R. Balasundharam, President of ICCI, Coimbatore, and Mr. R. Rajeshkumar, President, Coimbatore Custom House and Steamer Agents’ Association.
