The much needed work of completing the widening of 1.6 kilometer road reaching the zero gate of the Chennai port is quite likely to be accomplished by 2013. The road from S.N.Chetty Street to N4 Police station which is a part of the Ennore-Manali Road Improvement Project is a vital link in the project. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) , as it is now engaged in executing the project of widening not less than four major roads, is said to have already cleared the land inside Kasimedu fishing harbor, the place where fish was being sold and dried. Sources say that three underpasses, one for the vehicles and two for the pedestrians have been completed and some more are under progress. In the final stage, the road will be 10.5 meters wide with six lanes. The interests of the fisher folk will also be attended to by constructing a temporary service road near the auctioning place so that their daily routines may not be disturbed and unsettled. Chennai Port Trust has also applied for Coastal Regulation Zone; as soon as the clearance is obtained, the work will be completed in 45 days. Again, to start dredging, the port is waiting for the arrival of a crane; once arrived, the dredging will be taken up in two days.
