Chennai Port received Samudra Paheredar, a pollution control vessel

It was a moment of great delight and joy when Samudra Paheredar, indigenously built second pollution control vessel arrived at Chennai Port on Tuesday and it was received with a warm welcome by Mr. S.P Sharma, Coast Guard Region (East) Commander Inspector General. He said that the vessel would contain, recover and dispose of 500 tonnes of oil that might be spilled into the seas by accidents or hazards.  Oil spill is a great nightmare to all mariners and to all marine life. Fitted with an infrared surveillance system, the vessel can detect even a small oil spill. As a Coast Guard ship, it can also perform tasks such as surveillance, interdiction, search and rescue and also medical evacuation. Its dynamic positioning system makes it possible to remain static without mooring for offshore pollution control operation. It is 95 meters long with 4,300 tonnes displacing; it has a maximum speed of 20.5 knots  with an endurance of 6,500 nautical miles. It can stay at sea for about 20 days  and , above all, it can operate helicopters from its deck. It is one of the many vessels on order to strengthen coastal guard security. This vessel is commanded by Deputy Inspector General Iqbal Singh Chauhan. It has a complement of 111 personnel, including 11 officers.
