Mr. Oommen Chandy, Kerala Chief Minister, told newsmen after a meeting with the Shipping Minister, Mr.G.K.Vasan, that he has assured that a notification, much awaited, regarding the relaxation in the cabotage law will be sent out soon. This matter has been a bit long pending with the Government. This law is actually related to what is called the coastal cargo and this law restricts foreign vessels from carrying cargo from or to the destinations within the country. A continuous poor performance by the trans-shipment terminal at Vallarpadam for nearly 18 months now seems to influence the Government towards the relaxation. Economy matters under any circumstances. One cannot afford to fail to note the fact that Vallarpadam ICTT was commissioned 18 months ago with a great design to be able to handle as many as 30 lakh containers a year with one million containers to be handled for the first phase; but, as of now, it is said to have reached only 33% utilization. No doubt, corrective measures are not only urgent but inevitable, it seems. The relaxation in the cabotage law is believed to benefit Vallarpadam ICTT.
