Declaring the commissioning of Indian Coast Guard Station at Karaikal, Director General of Indian Coast Guard Vice-Admiral M. P. Muralidharan, AVSM, NM, pointed out the significance of boosting coastal surveillance. Increasing maritime commercial traffic demands an effective maritime security which includes important matters like marine environment protection, medical emergencies, preventing unlawful poaching, and disaster management. To achieve this goal of strengthening the coastal security, a chain of static sensors are being installed along the mainland and island areas. He said: “These radars would be remotely controlled from various key stations along the coast to keep track of ships, vessels and units.” The Coastal Guard Station (CGS) in Karaikal is the 35 CGS of the country and it is 5th one along the Tamil Nadu Coast. At present, the CGS at Karaikal will operate from rented buildings. The CGS would give attention to the fisher folk also. The Vice-Admiral said: “We see fisher folk as eyes and ears of Coast Guard, and there would be constant community engagement.”
