Under “Green Visakha Programme”, the Government has a plan of planting about 40 lakh saplings within five years in Vishakapatnam. As a part of this very laudable, socially conscious programme, Gangavaram Port started the drive of planting 20,000 saplings near Yarada Hills. In the function organized for this purpose, Mr. Ch. Venkata Ramayya, Gajuwaka MLA, Mr. Lav Agarwal, District Collector, and Mr. B. Ramanjaneyulu, Municipal Commissioner, participated in the presence of school children who, in fact, must be made to understand the significance of the programme. Under the green belt development programme, GPL, “the deepest all weather port in India with round the clock operations”, has a proposal to plant about 80,000 saplings in the port premises and in its neighbourhood. A matter of true appreciation is that the port is said to maintain a dedicated nursery with 1, 50,000 saplings of various kinds to promote environmental harmony in and around the port. When deficit rain seems to be almost an annual dread in the country, such social responsibility must be encouraged at all cost.
