With a view to replacing Daewoo series of bulk carriers, built in 1986\87 , the Shipping Corporation of India ordered four Panamax bulk carriers with STX (Dalian) Ship Building Company Limited, China, in August 2008 itself. SCI has taken delivery of the first of the four vessles , m.v. Vishva Anand, on July 20. Built on very stringent international regulations, the vessel has a gross tonnage of 44,007 tonnes with deadweight of 80,204 tonnes. It has been classed with LR and IRS. By strengthening its bulk carrier fleet, SCI can contribute effectively to the dry bulk trade. Out of 24 vessels on order, as of now, 10 are expected to be added to the fleet by the end of this year.
