Vedam to design and construct shallow water vessels for Nigeria

Mumbai based Vedam Design and Technology Center, has received orders to design and build 12 shallow water vessels from a Nigerian oil company for transporting oil generated in their oil fields. Construction is said to be already on and three vessels are scheduled to be delivered in March 2013 and the rest will be delivered in batches of three vessels every two months. Vedam, a partner with Sener, a global player in ship CAD\CAM\CAE software FORAN, has already designed the vessels according to order and had them constructed at a Nigerian shipyard. The vessels have been designed both for shallow waters of the winter months and deep drafts of the monsoon. According to Mr. Akshay Jain, CEO at Vedam Design and Technical Consultancy Private Limited, “Almost all parts of the barges are being made in India and China and then taken to Nigeria for building the barges. They will be finally built in a Nigerian shipyard with which Vedam has a contract only for the use of their labor and factory space”.

Each barge is 70 meters long and 15 meters wide. A shallow water barge has a capacity of 1000 dwt and is designed for the depth of 1.5 meters .In fact, such barges are meant for use in the inland waterways with fewer systems on board.
