Mr. Manish Saigal, KPMG National Head, Transport and Logistics, observed that the development of the port sector particularly the cargo handling capacity would be falling short of about 1,170 million tonnes against the target of the Maritime Agenda 2020 on account of slow progress of the projects implementation. The Maritime Agenda 2020 aims at creating a total port capacity of 3,200 million tonnes by 2020 across the country with the projected investment of INR 2,870 billions. According to Mr.Saigal, the investment so far made would be about less than 10% while the proper progress rate would have reached about 40% to 50% of the projections. He said: “The speed with which the industry expects the clearances for various investments in ports and logistics is not on the expected lines. Unlike one ministry for power sector, for clearances for investment in ports, one has to approach ministries connected with shipping, railways and road transport. We will be happy if a single window system is initiated to propel the growth on a fast-track”.
The Union Minister for Shipping Mr.G.K.Vasan released the Maritime Agenda 2010-20 in January 2011. The goal set for the shipping sector in the Agenda is “To create a port capacity of around 3200 MT to handle the expected traffic of about 2500 MT by 2020”.
Facts are stubborn things; facing the facts is the strongest of the facts.
