Land acquisition and land leases generally pose a tough problem to the port authorities when they plan to develop the port. And, any port cannot sustain itself without plans for future development. At the same time, any government, be it a state one or the Central, with its commitment to the welfare of the public, cannot jeopardize the interests of the people while encouraging the development of a port. It has to exercise caution and restrictions reflect caution on the part of the government. The Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Ms. D. Purandeswari is, however, making a right and proper appeal to the Minister for Shipping Mr.G.K.Vasan to consider the plea of Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) regarding the restrictions imposed on the land leases. The view of the Minister Ms. D. Purandeswari is that restrictions must not be imposed particularly on the port projects undertaken following the Private Public Participation (PPP) model which, in fact, has been a popular mode of investment, encouraged by the industry experts and by the Minister for Shipping Mr.G.K.Vasan also.
Guided by Draft Directives for Land Management by Major Managements-2012, the Cabinet Secretariat has kept normal leasing of port land under abeyance.
A great ship asks deep waters. A port needs constant growth.
