Prime Minister asks Ministries to expedite transport-related projects

After a series of performance review meetings last week, Prime Minister Mr.Manmohan Singh asked the transport related ministries to execute the projects fast within deadlines. He directed the Railway Ministry to sign the agreement with Maharashtra for support within 15 days for the development of the elevated Rail Corridor Project in Mumbai. The ministry must also invite bids for the proposed locomotive factory in Madhepura in Bihar by the end of the month. According to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister, “ The Ministry will finalize important milestones with timelines by December 31and bids for the project will be invited before the Rail Budget in 2013”. The Railway Board also has to submit its recommendations for setting up the Rail Tariff Authority by the end of this month. Satisfied with the progress of the work of the dedicated freight corridor, the Prime Minister directed the railway ministry to submit revised estimates with details regarding the sources of funding for the project.

As for the road and highways ministry, he expected the ministry to award projects as per targets decided for 2012-13 and the statement said that the ministry “will certainly cross 8,000 kilometer (km) of awards this year by March 2013”. Road projects at least for 3,000 kilometer will be finalized on Operate-Maintain-Transfer model.

As for the shipping ministry, it will “try to achieve the FY 12-13 target of awarding port projects with a capacity of 245 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA) by March “. The Prime Minister’s Office also pointed out that the issues related to security clearances and land transfer, if any, will be taken up with the cabinet secretary and ministries concerned and resolved. It also stated that a cabinet note for the new ports in Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal will be brought within a week and the projects will be awarded by March.
