Dr. P. Tamilvanan, Chairman, New Mangalore Port Trust, has thanked the exporters from Shimoga and Directors of Shimoga Chamber of Commerce and Industry for utilizing the port facilities for their advantage.
M/s Pearlite Lines, a major manufacturer of machinery parts in Shimoga, has diverted 16 containers stuffed with machinery parts through New Mangalore Port for export to Italy, Germany & England.
The port Chairman also visited the factory and held discussion with the management and they in turn have given assurance for using NMPT for their future exports.
Mr. Mahendrappa, President, Shimoga District Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has urged the importers and exporters of Shimoga to utilize the facilities available at the Gateway Port of Karnataka – New Mangalore Port. The Chairman has recalled the trade meet held earlier and export training programmes organized at Shimoga, where large volume of cargo viz., maize, agro products, machinery, containerized cargo, sugar, etc. is being generated for export. This has yielded positive results and more exporters have expressed their interest in diverting their cargo through this port.
The port has so far handled 22.29 million tonnes of cargo during the current year 2012-13(as on date) as against 19.65 million tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year with a growth rate of 13.43%. Increase in the handling of POL crude and products, coal, fertilizers, etc. has contributed to the growth in traffic.
The Chairman said the cruise season commenced on Nov. 24 with the arrival of 2 cruise vessels. So far 14 calls have been confirmed and more are expected.
Dr. Tamilvanan has attributed the overall increase in traffic to the pro-active marketing strategy adopted by the port coupled with the latest infrastructure addition like more deep draft berths, storage sheds, handling equipment, floating crafts and concrete roads.
