JNPT restructuring container terminal

Taking the right step to scuttle any further delay in completion of its dream project, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) has approved a plan to restructure the ambitious mega container terminal.

The decision to tweak the project, for quicker completion as well as for the benefit of the trade, was taken in a recently held trustees’ meet in Mumbai.

It may be noted here that the restructuring decision came to the Board’s discussion after the previous successful bidder refused to sign agreement to develop the facility.

Speaking to Sagar Sandesh, Mr. Ravi Raja, one of the trustees in JNPT, said the main objective of going for the restructuring is to complete the project in time and also to increase throughput in JNPT in shortest possible time.

Since the cost of the terminal was high (estimated about Rs. 8,000 crores with a capacity to load 4.8 million TEUs per year), it ran into trouble and restricting it into two projects would help the Trust get bidders, he stated.

According to official sources, each terminal (after tweak) will have a quay length of about 1,000 metres with a capacity to handle about 2.4 million TEUs a year.

Following the Board’s nod, JNPT has hired Tata Consulting Engineers to review the techno-economic feasibility report prepared by Consulting Engineering Services (India) Pvt. Ltd for the project, he added.

The port can float global tenders for the two terminals by February next year,” Mr. Raja further added.
