Security drill thrills onlookers

On Nov. 7 the sea territory off Paradip coast turned into a confrontation zone as joint coastal security exercise to thwart possible terror strike and sea-route infiltration got off to an exciting kick-start.

Coined as ‘Hamla-1 (OD), the security drill of this nature is being undertaken every year along the coastline since the past four years to make the coastal security exercise foolproof.

“The two-day security drill was a coordinated teamwork by Naval wing, Coast Guard and State Marine Police to counter coastal security exigencies. Earlier it was successfully carried out in the country’s sensitive and infiltration-prone coastal territories to re-energize coastal security preparedness”, said Mr. K.P.S. Raghuvamshi, Deputy Inspector General, Coast Guard, Paradip.

The State Marine Fisheries Wing officials, traditional marine fishermen, trawl operators besides other stakeholders were involved in the exercise to bring them together for safeguarding of coastal territory.

“The 26/11 Mumbai sea-route terror strike was re-enacted though the fierce mid-sea battle was not real but a mock exercise. The anti-national forces penetrated the security ring to perpetrate the Mumbai terror strike while security personnel masquerading as terror groups were intercepted by agile and vigilant coastal security forces,” narrated Mr. Bhabani Shankar Mishra, State Police Nodal Officer for Coastal Security.

The exercise, despite being mock one, was abuzz with seriousness, said the official.

The warships of the Navy and the Coast Guard besides highly improvised interceptor sea-worthy vessels were on the counter insurgency voyage. All the attacking elements and aggressors were neutralized with renewed vigour by the Coastal defence force during the exercise.

It’s an annual coordinated security exercise to bolster up the sea-route security. Orchestrated efforts are being made to make various agencies familiar with the standard operating procedures of the sea-route security mechanism. The two-day surveillance exercise would inculcate pros and cons of security needs amongst the participating agencies.

The whole focus of this venture is to inculcate combative spirit among the agencies involved in coastal security. In case of any eventuality of sea-route subversive activity, the mock drill would keep them better prepared to face the crisis.

The exercise that forms the part of Centre’s coastal security plan is intended to improve the coordinating capabilities of dealing with any coastal contingency and exigency at any given time.
