Railways and Japan join hands for the western dedicated freight corridor

According to a senior official of Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation (DFCC), Railways and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have signed a loan agreement for the project which comprises the two routes, one from Vadodara to Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) and another from Rewari to Dadri in the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor and the project cost is about INR 20,000 crore . This Dedicated Freight Corridor of 1,499 kilometer will be of great use for the container transport between the existing as well as emerging ports in Western India and the northern hinterland. The value of the project, undertaken through Special Terms of Economic Participation (STEP), is estimated at JPY 295 billion which is about INR 20,000 crore. This is a soft loan with 40 years as the repayment period. As for the vital question of the land acquisition for the project, out of the total of 3,608 hectares required for Phase I, a comfortable 3,186 hectares have been acquired and as for the Phase II, 1,041 hectares have been acquired against the requirement of 2,252 hectares.

When the loan agreement was signed last week, Mr. Shinya Ejima, the country head of JICA, Mr. Girish Pillai, Advisor (Infrastructure) Railway Board and Mr. R.K.Gupta, Managing Director, DFCC, were present.
