NMPT wooing Shimoga region to boost traffic

Mr. P. Tamilvanan, Chairman of the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), has said that the port is targeting a key region in central Karnataka to boost traffic growth, as the Shimoga region is producing a large volume of cargo such as maize, machinery and containerized cargo among others.

Pearlite Lines, a major manufacturer of machinery parts in Shimoga, has now diverted 16 containers through the port for export to Italy, Germany and England, he stated and added that the manufacturer has agreed to route its future export shipments through the port.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mahendrappa, President of the Shimoga Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has urged the traders in Shimoga to utilise the facilities available at the New Mangalore Port. Port officials have already held consultations with exporters from the region in this regard, he pointed out.

NMPT recorded a 13.43 per cent growth in cargo handling until Nov. 19 in the current fiscal. The port handled 22.29 million tonnes of cargo as against 19.65 million tonnes during the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. The Chairman attributed this growth to the increase in POL (petroleum, oil and lubricants) products, crude oil, coal and fertilisers handled during the period. Deep-draught berths, storage sheds, handling equipment, floating craft and concrete roads have helped spur this growth, he observed.
