The Minister said that the terminal would have a capacity of five million tonnes of cement a year. Tenders have been invited after the recent renovation of the port and the Government deciding to promote coastal shipping. Following this, Agrima Consultants International is given the permission to move ahead with the cement terminal proposal.
Accordingly, cement from various plants of the firm would reach the Kollam Port, where it would be unloaded using pneumatic unloading systems. This would then be packed into bags or containers and taken to distributors across the State. At least 33 vessels are expected to reach the cement terminal every year as per initial estimates, he said.
The Ports Department has initiated procedures to grant on lease 1.25 hectares of land for the cement terminal, while another 1.63 hectares would be acquired for a truck terminal for the firm, he stated.
