ClassNK conducts Prime Management seminar in Mumbai

The Prime Management seminar, conducted recently by ClassNK in Mumbai for a wide section of the stakeholders, laid stress on the types of training the mariners will have to undergo. The seminar, which began with an opening address by ClassNK Executive Vice-President K. Fujiwara, deliberated on the current situation surrounding the Maritime Labour Convention-2006 and ECDIS Competence requirements of the amended standards of training and certification.

Mr. S. Sampath, General Manager of ClassNK, Mumbai Office, gave a brief presentation on the objectives of Prime Management. He mentioned that ClassNK’s total management certification service package is created to help maritime companies around the world achieve high quality management systems that effectively address the various challenges they face in an ever-changing industry. As part of this package, ClassNK offers various certification services that are acclaimed internationally for their high quality. These services are grouped under three categories: Safety & Environment, Education & Training and Working Conditions and cover a wide range from certification of recruitment and placement service providers to NK-run training courses for maritime instructors.

Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) adheres to the stipulations set up by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). It adds to the trustworthiness of the electronic chart system in order to facilitate better navigational application. There has been a lot of anxiety and foreboding among mariners, training institutes, shipping companies, regulatory bodies, flag states, port states, front line manufacturers and others about the training requirements. Endeavouring to put at rest these qualms and also serve as a facilitator in helping to implement the regulation seamlessly, ClassNK conducted this seminar.

An elaborate presentation on the requirement and approval of ECDIS training course was presented by Capt. N. Saito.

ClassNK gave a demonstration and explanation of the ECDIS simulation system with the cooperation of Furuno, Japan Marine Science Inc, Japan Radio Co. Ltd, and Tokyo Keiki Inc, all leading promoters of ECDIS.
