Cadets demonstrate technical talents

The Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI), Mumbai, organised the annual technical paper competition, “Castrol Seminar”, when Mr. B. V. Ramana Murthy, General Manager (Technical), Selandia Ship Management (India) Pvt. Ltd., graced the occasion as the chief guest and chief judge. Mr. Mughunagalingam and Mr. Vikram Srivastava of Castrol India were the Guests of Honour on the occasion.

Mr. M. M. Piplani, Mr. V P Datar, Mr. Manoj Ballabh, Mr. Ravi Iyyer and Mr. R. C. Mahajan evaluated the presentation as judges. Mr. Rajeeva Prakash, Deputy Director, MERI, welcomed the guests and delegates.

The cadets presented their papers under the theme of ‘Safe, Secure and Efficient Shipping on Clean Oceans,’ detailing measures taken by diverse stakeholders to prevent pollution of the environment.

The seminar, which invites participation from cadets of maritime training institutes from across Maharashtra, is supported by the Castrol India Marine Lubrications Division. It aims at encouraging cadets to showcase their talents. Apart from MERI, cadets from The Great Eastern Institute of Maritime Studies, Lonavala, and the Maharashtra Academy of Naval Education and Training, Pune, also participated. Out of 16 papers received, seven were selected for the final presentation.

Mr. Mughunagalingam applauded the quality of presentations and assured continued support for the event. Mr. Ramana Murthy advised the cadets to have more originality while presenting papers.

MERI’s 3rd year cadets of BSC (Maritime Studies), led by Cadet Manish Mayank, won the first prize for their paper titled “Ecofriendly Lubricants”. The second prize was won by PGDME cadets group from MERI led my Cadet Amit Saxena. Cadet Gurav Rohan Prakash and his team from The Great Eastern Institute of Maritime Studies were honoured with the third prize.
