The long-drawn confrontation between Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) and Haldia Bulk Terminals (HBT) Private Limited, a joint venture of ABG-LDA, has even attracted the attention of the very Chief Minister of West Bengal. HBT said that it could not resume its operations at its berths 2 and 8 because of lawlessness at the complex. It said that while it was earnestly preparing to re-start the operations at its berths, three of its top officials were assaulted at gun point. It duly sought the intervention of the police to assure safety to its employees. The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Ms. Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday, refuting the allegations of HBT said: “I have no information of any problems (at Haldia). It is not an issue. It is an exaggeration. The administration and the police are doing their work”. Trinamool MP Mr. Suvendu Adhikari blamed HBT for “blackmailing KoPT and other stakeholders”. He said that port users had not been harassed at all. Mr. Shyamal Chakravarti, State President of Centre of Indian Trade Unions asked for an enquiry into Haldia crisis and also sought the Union Government to intervene.
