Haldia Bulk Terminals (HBT) is a joint venture between Kolkata Port Trust and a private operator ABG-LDA and earlier HBT “right sized”, a modern management euphemism for downsizing, its workforce by terminating 275 workers. And, the retrenched workers with their family members held a sit-in demonstration outside Haldia complex on Friday seeking reinstatement, though there is the court order prohibiting any union activity within 100 meters of the dock complex. The Court in its interim order said: “The retrenched workmen as well the unions to which they owe allegiance shall be entitled to carry on trade union activities, but shall stay at a distance of 100 meters on either side of the entry gates of HDC”. Mr. Suvendu Adhikari, Trinamool MP from Tamluk said: “275 people have lost their jobs. What else they can do, if they lose jobs?” HBT handles two mechanized berths 2 and 8 and it suspended the operations in those berths since September 25, attributing it to “lawlessness” at the complex.
