FedEx plans to add 20,000 workers for holiday season

According to Reuters, FedEx Corp has plans to hire 20,000 more workers for the holiday season and it expects the shipping volume will be 13% more this year. Mr.T.Michael Glenn, executive vice- president of market development and corporate communications said that FedEx has been hiring hands through 2012 especially at the Ground and Smart Post division which actually handle bulk of the holiday volume. The corporation expects about 10% increase this year and this will mean December 10 may be the busiest day ever with some 19 million shipments. E-commerce is expected to give a boost to shipping volume on so-called ‘Green Monday’ which falls on second Monday of December. Moreover, since more shoppers purchase their holiday gifts through internet or mobile phones, it will certainly mean more shipping volume to FedEx and United Parcel Service which have delivery contracts with most of the biggest of internet retailers. Many consumers wait and search for discount driven by global weak economy and expiring tax cuts in the United States. This leads to a huge rush of last minute orders. There are some high-tech products which prove good prospect of business. Mr. Glenn said: “There are a lot of high-tech products and people are saving money in other places to spend on these goods. We certainly are expecting a strong peak season for FedEx”.
