Misdeclaration cost INR 3.3 lakh to CMA-CGM at Vallarpadam ICTT

When the container marked ‘empty’ that reached the ICTT on Septermber 23 was opened by the authorities, they found it was not empty but, instead, it was loaded with cartons of medicines. A senior Customs official said that the value of the medicines was around 40 lakhs. The shipping company, CMA-CGM paid a fine of 3.3 lakh and a penalty of 1.10 lakh of rupees. According to the Customs Official, “The shipping line authorities have paid the amount and the container has been cleared and delivered to them”. The container came from Port Klang, Malaysia. After a hectic enquiry, it was later found out that the container was shipped from Brussels to Sydney and it got mixed up with the empty containers. Some lack of attention, though unintentional, has resulted in so much of unproductive time and money.
