The Kochi Port had announced attractive strategic concessions on the vessel-related charges for the ships that call at ICTT Vallarpadam. The Board of Trustees has approved the proposal to extend the concessions which ended in September. The concessions in tariff actually matched with that of the Colombo Port for mainline vessels with international ports of call in America, Europe, Australia, Africa and China. For a mainline vessel of 60,000 gross register tonnage with 12 hours of stay at the port, the concession was extended up to 86%. A container vessel with a minimum of two sailings from Kochi to West Asia and South-East Asia within 30 days will be eligible for 50% concession provided the cargo loaded from ICTT does not have more than 20% of the cargo headed to Colombo. As expected, these concessions have attracted more vessels to the port. The number of mainline vessels calling at Kochi had gone up to 72 during 2011-12. It may be recalled here that the government announced relaxation in the cabotage law with a review attached to it. The Port has to justify the relaxation by improving its trade to deserve the relaxation after three years.
