GAC Protective Solutions is a partnership between the global marine service provider GAC and the maritime intelligence agency AKE. It has come out with a new concept of the Maritime Risk Management Onion which, in effect, reduces dependence on the presence of armed guards on board the ship for sea defence. The concept is on a multi-faceted and multi-layered approach to sea defence. It follows the principles of Intelligence, Detection, Communications, Defend and Deter, Control and the Safe Haven. Rick Filon, Director of Maritime Security called upon the ship-owners “to undertake a rational assessment of all the security options available to them. History informs us that the best security solution lies in a robust system, rather than a single device. That is why we believe that a security system that comprising several layers of non-lethal threat mitigation measures, as set out in the Maritime Risk Management Onion, is the right solution”. Group Vice President GAC Solutions Christer Sjodoff described it as “the most cost-effective means of deterring sea crime and providing them (the ship owners and operators) with the confidence to sail anywhere in the world without relying on armed guards”. GAC Protective Solutions provides services like onboard crew training, pre-voyage preparations etc.
