An LNG Terminal at Ennore Port

Ennore Port is keen to have an LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) terminal and the pre-project activities are in full swing. The addition of an LNG terminal would prove a timely boon to the state itself. LNG is a well-known eco-friendly gas that might be a good fuel substitute, thus bringing great relief, to some extent, to the state that is now facing unprecedented acute energy crisis. The words of Mr. S.Velumani, Ennore Port Chairman and Managing Director must be welcome to all: “The pre-project activities like front-end engineering design study and environment clearance are underway. We expect the company to award contracts for execution of the project soon. If every thing goes well, the terminal would be commissioned by 2015-16”. (We only pray that everything should go well.) The project is of INR 4,500 crore and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation is said to hold 5% stake and therefore, the project is looked upon to bringing relief to the state now suffering from an acute power shortage. Mr. Velumani said : “ LNG is a good alternative fuel and it can be supplied to gas-based power plants”. LNG can be the raw material to power plants and it can also be used by the industries that now use naptha , crude oil etc.LNG terminal at Ennore Port, the first of its kind on the east coast, will have 5 million tonnes capacity every year and it can be increased to 10 million tonnes also. The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), while waiting for environmental clearance, has also set the process on to get the approval from the port.
