
At the curtain raiser event of the forthcoming international conference “India Maritime 2012” Mr.G.K.Vasan, the Shipping Minister, touched upon the vital issues of the shipping industry and the augmentation of the ports. He said that his Ministry was framing a new land policy for the major ports and it would provide the “level playing field” to all the stakeholders. The policy will be sent to the Cabinet for final approval. He said that efforts are being taken by the Ministry to set up two new ports, one in Andhra Pradesh and the other one in West Bengal. With regard to the security clearances, he said: “The Ministry is also taking steps to ensure expeditious grant of environment clearance, land acquisition and litigation”. By the end of 12th Five Year Plan (2012-2017), to be able to handle the estimated traffic of about 2,700 million tonnes, both the major and non-major ports have plans of augmentation to the tune of INR 1.80 crore. Both Public-Private-Participation (PPP) and private sector participation would be continued for the development of the port infrastructure. About “India Maritime 2012” to be held in Goa between October 17 and 20, he added: “The event will provide a platform to organizations involved in port infrastructure, shipping lines and management, cargo handling, ship builders and manufacturers as well as other service providers to showcase their capabilities”.
