At a seminar on strategic export management, organized by the Federation of Indian Export Organizations in Visakhapatnam, the Chairman of FIEO urged that the port connectivity was very urgent in the state since more than half of the export cargo from the state was routed through the Chennai port. Mr. Walter D’Souza insisted that the AP government should develop the connectivity to Visakhapatnam, Gangavaram, Kakinada and Krishnapatnam ports in the State. He added: “It is all the more important as Andhra Pradesh is planning to develop another major port in the State. Of course, there has been considerable improvement in container cargo movement after the establishment of the container terminal here”. He also pointed out that the export from the state has been steadily growing; however, the growth rate was much lower than the national average growth rate of 21%. For the current fiscal year, Andhra Pradesh export performance has registered a growth of 20% over the corresponding period last year; the export was worth $5.1 billion in five months till July.
