On Thursday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh inaugurates Kochi Metro Rail Project by laying the foundation stone. The 25 kilometer project linking Aluva-Pettah stretch is budgeted at Rs.5,100 crore and it is implemented with equity participation from the Centre which will invest Rs.1,002 crore and the State Government will contribute Rs. 2009 crore and the balance of Rs.2,170 crore will be financed by Japan International Corporation Agency. The project will be executed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and an MoU is yet to be signed. The project is a mass rapid transport system with an elevated light rail. In the first phase,it is pointed out that it will have 22 stations and each Metro train will have three cars to begin with and it will accommodate 200 passengers. No doubt, the Metro will be a great boon to the city, taking off a bulk of road traffic which is becoming in major cities less of a convenience. The Board of Kochi Metro Rail Limited will review the project and examine the possibility of extending the facility to the suburbs as well. With the clearance given by the Centre, the Kochi Metro is expected to operate by 2016.
