IMO Secretary-General for a ‘sustainable maritime development’

The key-note address of IMO Secretary-General Mr.Koji Sekimizu in the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) Conference in London on 12th Septermber, 2012, was comprehensive in nature dealing with all the key issues faced by the shipping industry. His vision is for a ‘ sustainable maritime development’ for which he has listed eight goals of equal importance which cover areas of great concern like safety, energy efficiency, innovation, maritime education and  training, anti-piracy measures, maritime traffic management, its infrastructure development  and global standards . Regarding the ballast water management, he observed that a large number of ballast water treatment technologies are available and the ship-owners should make good use of them. They should also ratify the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments, 2004 and try to implement its provisions as soon as possible since delay would lead to negative consequences. He added: “The problems associated with the ballast water are inherently connected to the expansion of the world trade. This is an issue from which the shipping industry cannot escape”. His laudable spirit was reflected when he referred to IMO’s measures as good measures. Simple and effective are his words: “They are good measures—good for the environment, good for mankind and good for shipping. And that is why I believe you should not wait to implement them”.
